ALICE BOB AND FIREWALL

In the last two or three weeks when our entire Human Race was facing a threat of a complete annihilation of some sort, from an unknown asteroid coming towards us from deep space like Nibiru or something, there took place some terrific events in the Physics fraternity which missed most of our attentions. One of them was the ‘Closure of LHC’, the other was the arrival of the ‘Black hole Firewall Controversy’ which some are saying was ignited by a tweet Prof. Sean Carroll on the second week of December, followed by a Post on that by her wife on her own online columns. Regardless of the source, it was and in fact still is going on as a burning topic for debates, questions and counter arguments, people like Leo Susskind, John Preskill was also not spared from this and what could I’ve done other than to follow and comprehend what they are saying and make a logic out of it on my own way.




In the mean time someone from Edmonton, Canada confessed me in an E-mail (I don’t know from where he Got my mail address though) that let alone understanding what is going on at present, where people are shouting against each other about firewall, Alice-Bob and stuff, he in truth, does not even understand what ‘Firewall’ actually means and said that he initially interpreted that the talks which are going on are about the Firewalls installed in our computers and he asked me to clear this out and though his mail appeared to me as a bit funny, it led me to realize that there might be many others interested in Astrophysics but without technical know-how who are actually finding it tough to understand just like that Canadian guy did. So the Paragraphs which follows are dedicated to all of them.

So..what is a fire wall ??

To understand Firewall we start with a Particular Scenario, where two friends, Alice and Bob (The two beloved fictional characters used in Most of the Quantum Mechanical experiments) are hanging around with each other in a weekend Picnic somewhere in Space. After a wonderful time together and lots of fun and play, Alice and Bob went for a walk, only to discover after a few steps that they have come dangerously close to an Evil black hole lurking in the vicinity. The Black hole tries to attract them towards itself, while Alice and Bob, both tries to escape. Fate plays unfair with Alice, she was suctioned into the Black hole crossing the Event Horizon while Bob somehow escapes. Now the question is what happens to Alice from here ??..

Until recently most of the Physicist thought that nothing special would happen to Alice, it’s just that she will not be able to communicate with the outside world anymore and the singularity of the black hole will slowly attract her towards itself but she will not be able to even feel it until she comes extremely close to it. So all and all, Alice will be cool.

Now recently, Joe Polchinski and some of his brilliant students argued against this 'Not so argued' notion. They said that as soon as Alice crosses the Event horizon, she will face a wall of fire which will instantly vaporize her and convert her into pure energy, though this entire process will happen so fast that the death of Alice will be practically painless and John Preskill also supported it saying that, facing the firewall for Alice will be nothing but dying in deep sleep in one of his articles and also a tweet as well. Bob will however not notice the incineration of Alice even if he crosses the Event Horizon at the same instant as Alice did rather than escaping, because when you are inside a Black hole, then you’ll not be able to even see yourself, let alone someone else.

And you won't believe..that's it, that's how much there is and that was how much you needed to know to Get things and your own research started on Firewalls and stuff.

But let’s be honest with you, Black hole Firewalls with all these emerging hypothesizes is not at all a pressing practical problem for us, and it’s not something that you’ll face if you enter into a Black hole after you read this one. Because for Black holes to have an effective firewall, it’s theorized that it must be of that kind which is large in size and have evaporated more than half it’s total mass. But our Universe is too young to have such a Black hole at present. Nevertheless, things like these are always appreciated for a bit of intellectual exercise and controversies like these are taking place in Physics for more than Four Centuries, with starting from ‘The Gravity Train', to more recently 'Warp Drives'. Anyways, time to sign-off, will be waiting eagerly to know Your views on this one. Many considers his writings a bit intense at times, never the less, it’s highly informative and is often updated by the man himself. People who knows him personally, even slightly, like me will tell you how humble the man is compared to most of his peers and that’s what make TRF even more special.


Those who used to follow Cosmic Variance will know whom I am talking about. Yes, it’s Sean Carrol. One of the sharpest man in the entire Physics fraternity, his blog is highly informative and well maintained as well and a must follow.


SIMONS FOUNDATION SCIENCE BLOG

Fantastic one for a Science enthusiast and especially those with a bit less technical knowledge, because the articles posted here are written in very simple words. Among the writers panel there are some great persons, like Natalie Wolchover, Erica Klarreich, Jeniffer Ouelette and other awesome ones.

A blog where people just don’t talk about core Science all the time, humor is also in the menu of items. A great source for information in the simplest way possible. A fantastic list of people in the Panel makes the very presence of this blog in the internet a blessing for everyone interested in Physics and as far as I know, Sir LuboÅ¡ Motl and Sir Sean Carrol always follows this blog and you should do it too.


The tagline says, ‘The Physics of nothing, everything, and all the things in between’. What does it mean ?? It means you’ll get everything, literally everything you want to read about related to Physics. The coolest Panel of physicist including Paul Halpern, Andrew Zimmerman Jones, Sean Carrol, Lee Smolin, James Stein and others makes Nova Physics shine like a hypernova in the internet. He he, the end was rather cool..


So these are the TOP 5 Picks from me and my new year resolution will be to make it myself to this list when I create it exactly a year from now for 2014. Now, it’s time to sign off, but a small request before I leave. LHC SHUTS DOWN : AN ERA ENDS !!!


It’s an end of an era for both LHC and Science itself. LHC shut down it’s operation for 2012 last week and it’ll resume all those awesome smash and hit stuffs at 2015, once the energy level upgradation is complete..however as news suggests, there will be some action there in the mid part of next year where some heavy ions will be collided against each other..but it’ll not be that much interesting if the words in the street is to be believed..

However, this long break of about 2 years that we are getting is a great chance for us or so to say for mankind itself to analyze the enormous amount of data we gathered from the collisions since 2010 and more than 70% of it being fetched in the last 1 year itself..the graph below being a testament to that..as you can see the sudden rise in number of collisions in 2012 compared to that in 2010 and 2011..


 

The last couple of weeks at CERN has been spent on doing some experiment focusing on future operations on 2015 and beyond when the collider opens again. Till now the collisions has been done in what is called a ’50 ns bunch circumstances’..that means the minimum time between the collision of two consecutive bunches of protons coming from a given direction is 50 nanosecond. But last week scientist there tried a 25 ns spacing collision to see how Good the machine will work and will it show any anomaly or not. Since 25 ns spacing collisions will yield twice as much collision in a given amount of time compared to 50 ns spacing ones..we will be able to essentially gather 3 years worth of data in 1 and a half year. But as you can predict I think..the 50 ns mode it better for the machine as that’s why it needs a separate upgradation to work in 25 ns mode consistently..

Anyways..

MUON DECAY : FROM A LAYMAN VIEW

Before I start..I must tell You that if you are here expecting a brief lecture on advanced stuffs like muon decay calculation, muon lifetime measurement, polarized muon decay or muon decay relativity, then you are at the wrong place..because here we will keep things straight-simple and basic.

So let’s first have a Glance on what Muons are just for the sake of recapitulation.

Muon (μ) is an elementary particle similar to the electron, with unitary negative electric charge (−1) and a spin of 12. Together with the electron, the tau, and the three neutrinos, it is classified as a lepton. As is the case with other leptons, the muon is not believed to have any sub-structure at all.


Did Your head spin ??..at least mine did..

Anyways..

In a common Feynman Diagram..we represent a Muon Particle with a point on a straight line which shows us it’s direction of propagation in space. But from a Quantum Mechanical Point view..something really different is happening. The Particle at the first Place can not be defined by a Point itself..since defining it with a Point will mean that we have been able to measure the Position and Momentum of the Particle at a Particular instant with absolute accuracy simultaneously and it will simply make Sir Werner Heisenberg unhappy. So we will have to define it with a cloud of uncertainty with undefined boundaries and the Particle..oh..I m sorry..the inherent wave probability or something like that is constantly interacting with its neighbourhood, exchanging bosons of the interacting field in between. Beside all this..the Particle also emits and reabsorbs stuffs that it was Generated from itself, which we technically call virtual Particles. Now to say Virtual..You must not think that it’s a Ghost like Particle..non-existent in reality and is a trick to simplify the correlated Mathematics. Virtual Particles are in fact as real as the original ones..it’s just that, we can neglect them in simple approximations.



Hold on..there are more in the kitty.

That Muon also emits W Bosons of Virtual kind with electric charge equal to it’s own and it momentarily turns into a Muon Neutrino, however it soon turns to the original Muon as soon as the Virtual W Boson completes it’s fairy tale..or maybe not so fairy tale journey in the outside world. Not so fairy tale, because it also splits into fermion-antifermion pairs of different kind meanwhile and you may also like to know a specific anomaly in this juncture. Among all possible combinations of fermion-antifermion pairing..if the Virtual W-Boson decides to split into a electron-neutrino pair..then it may so happen that both of them rather than fusing back to the W-boson, decide to leave the entire scheme themselves for eternity, turning the Muon to a Muon Neutrino permanently. But it does not however violate Momentum and Energy conservation law..since the total mass of the Muon Neutrino, Electron and the Electron Neutrino will be smaller than the mass of the original Muon after the end of our observation. But however for a finite amount of time..the Conservation laws are violated inside our Universe and can be cite as an example while reading a related article I wrote, named ‘CONSERVATION LAWS & LOOPHOLES INSIDE’..
So..this disappearance trick..the probability of which happening out of a Given number of Muon disintregation process is constant, creates the whole backdrop of Muon decay itself. The constant nature in fact creates something of an exponential law..generally followed by decay processes of all kind..

However, the Muon life time though generally stays within a microsecond..but the slight variation from one case to another depends upon the likelihood of the decay process gathering enough energy from outside.

So what You think..a Muon decay experiment in your backyard will be something of a Good idea or is it too early to think about ??

CONSERVATION LAWS & LOOPHOLES INSIDE


In this article I’ve tried to explore the weaker parts of our so strong and hard to break ‘Conservation laws’..like Warner Heisenberg always did.with the help of some Quantum mischief..and I just extended his efforts or at least tried to.

 Before I start..I think you would find it really interesting to know what actually created the backdrop for me to write this post. What happened actually is..yesterday evening..I was teaching a batch of XI Graders like I do in any other usual Friday evening. I was actually teaching them a chapter which was titled ‘PHYSICAL and CHEMICAL CHANGES’. Now since the guys I teach are just 3 Years junior to me..they do have the freedom to ask me weird questions just for the sake of having fun by annoying me and making me feel like a fish out of water. But when they repeatedly made facial expressions which clearly said that they, like most of us don’t agree to the Mass and Energy Conservation laws to the fullest, I was rather forced to change the textual course of study and let them help out to understand that why stuffs like Virtual Particles, Anomalies like Photon Mass Gather still stays in the realm of Conservation principles even though they keep on breaking them time and again.

Now..I think that there are scores of science enthusiasts out there who like my dear students also don’t agree to the Conservation laws of nature but for some reason no one have explained them why they should..

Yes..it’s quite true that it happens in nature that an Electron for example at a Given moment emits a Photon in order to go to lower energy state to attain stability. But the very next moment that Photon somehow disintegrates and generates an Electron-Positron Pair  with both them having mass. So one moment all you had is a simple electron..in the very next you’ve not only an extra electron beside the one you had already..a positron as well all breaking the laws of Mass and Energy conservation with a smile of a silent assassin.

If another example is to be considered to further strengthen your claims..let us consider two electrons coming from opposite direction colliding with each other and subsequently they are getting scattered. Now from a Quantum mechanical Point of view..the explanation of the entire phenomenon will be something like this. The two particles actually interacted with other which made them exchange a photon of given frequency and after process was over they simply got scattered to particular direction in accordance to the Tangent and Co-Tangent scheme of scatter and they have now simply lost memory of their interaction whatsoever.



But what happened to the Photon ??

Use Momentum and Energy Conservation laws..You’ll find that both of them will yield results that’ll make you conclude that the Photon have a mass..while we know..that they don’t !!!

So what You would conclude ??..

The Conservation laws are wrong ??..

YES..They are wrong but yet they are right..

The bottom line being that they are still right because..while loopholes in the Conservation laws come out every now and then..if the phenomenon creating the fallacy does not last long and disappears before the rest of the Universe notices it..all of it does not violate the laws whatsoever and all of it is really permitted in the Quantum rule book.

It’s like having a caretaker in your home and you and your family leaving for a vacation..giving the caretaker an open access to the entire house and it’s amenities, of course except the secret lockers. Now once he has full access to your home..he can watch TV for 5 hours straight..he can use the AC Machine all day long..he can use your toasters in the kitchen to have 10 in place of the regular 2 toasted breads etc etc etc. The only rule being that..he would have to compensate whatever extra he uses so that you and your family don’t notice any anomalies anywhere in your home whatsoever and a bit hard to believe..but that’s how Conservation laws also work..

PARALLEL UNIVERSES : JUST A HYPOTHESIS ??


In this article I’ve discussed about whether we should consider the concept of Parallel Universes to be a stuff of fiction or a matter of Reality ??..

As a matter of fact, I must confess that from the very day when I learned about the concept of Multiverse and Other Universes existing Parallel to ours which was I think about 6 or so years ago when I was like 14 or so..I was really fascinated to the best extent one possible can. To be honest I really like to discuss about the topic no matter where I am..


So why don’t we start by asking ourselves that why at all do we consider the concept of Multiverses to be so out of the box..so hypothetical..so unreal ?? And why scientists like Neil Turok are interrupted by someone as respectable as Stephen Hawkins during his talk and is directly challenged in a $50 bet that he can never be right..??

It reminds me of how out of place Nicolas Copernicus might have felt when he was the only one telling that it’s the Sun which is at the center and not the Earth and also Sir Edwin Hubble for a comparatively short duration though..when he conjectured Milky way to be one of other billion galaxies out there and I think you’re intellectual enough to understand what I mean.

But it’s true that our horizon of Scientific knowledge has changed quite a few times..isn’t it ?? Sean Carrol said something really reasonable..

In history, our view of the world has always been growing. It should not surprise use if that’s happening again.

But you know what ??

The proposal of Multiverses rather than creating new problems..solves some old ones. Weird ???..No..because paradoxes like the apparent “fine-tuning” of the universe we live in. The constants of nature, the intrinsic strength of the fundamental forces, the value of the energy density of the vacuum (which turns out to be improbably small), and even the number of spacetime dimensions of our universe, all appear, in our universe, to be finely tuned to enable complexity and life to form. It seems like as if just one random lottery ticket is being sold to us, and it happens to be the jackpot number. But if you think of a multitude of Universes existing..then we can conclude with some real logic that look my friend..out of all those universes out there..our one was the most finely tuned one and thus it supports life and since all other has faults one way or the other..they are not able to supports intelligent life but he he..we do !!!

So..it’s quite clear after all this that though concept of Parallel Universe or Multiverses as they are popularly known may seem to be a mere hypothesis..but it would take some real logical reasoning to disprove them who thinks that Multiverses are for real..
